What’s pulling your cake business under?
Last year the boffins at Falmouth Uni discovered the thing that is most likely to take UK cake makers under.*
I'll get straight to it.
It's selling cake.
Seriously? You might ask. Isn't that what cake businesses do?
Well, yes and no.
Apparently, selling cake is much, much more difficult than making cake.
Look, our custom cake sector knows how to make cake. Making cake as a complete doddle. Making and decorating cake is what we cake makers can literally do with our eyes closed.
But selling cake...well, that’s where we’re all at sea.
We get tongue-tied. Awkward. We cross our fingers. We undervalue our work. We wonder why they didn’t call back. We worry we put them off. We imagine our quote was too high. We hear ‘you’re too expensive’ and we die a little inside.
That’s why our Regional events in 2022 are all about SELLING CAKE. Because thriving as a cake business is more than an amazing cake photo, or a gorgeous testimonial.
To get better at selling cake, we’ll need to understand our inner barriers. Particularly our awkwardness around money, budgets, expectations. As cake makers we’ll need to look at how we have our customer conversations. And all the values we communicate without saying a thing.
Because, if we stay underwater in the sales department, we’ll slowly drown as businesses.
It’s uncomfortable to face, but the brilliant thing is that it’s absolutely 100% possible to learn how to sell better.
And no. Please. None of us need a cheap shiny suit or salesman patter to sell our fab cakes. We need to find approaches that work AND that fit with our actual personality!
At our Regional gatherings this Spring, we’ll steer well clear of weird, cringy, or pressurising approaches. We’ll dismantle internal hurdles, and discover smart, practical, natural ways of securing great orders.
These approaches will make for sustainable, profitable business for the long haul.
Which means after a few hours of practical, no-nonsense, sales wisdom, you'll be confidently out of deep water, and landing cake orders like total rock-stars!
Here's the bottom line:
Making gorgeous cake does not make a cake business.
Selling cake without knowing how, can drag us right under.
Using tried-and-tested cake-sales knowledge will land orders, fill the kitty and help our businesses to float.
Grab the life-ring.
If you have ANY questions, just message us and we'll be happy to answer.
